7 Essential Steps to Prepare for a Stress-Free Vacation

Congratulations! You’ve just booked your ultimate getaway. Whether it’s a tropical beach escape, a cultural city adventure, or a relaxing cruise, the excitement of having your trip planned is unmatched...but now that your trip is booked, what’s next? Don’t let the post-booking lull catch you off guard.

As an experienced traveler, here are seven important things to consider to ensure your trip is as smooth and stress-free as possible!

Tip #1 - Check Your Travel Documents

Make sure your passport and visa are in order. If you’re traveling internationally, ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your return date. Double-check visa requirements for your destination and apply well in advance if needed. However, beware of scam websites that claim to give you a visa, or fill out documents on your behalf. If using a third party, be sure to do your research and confirm whether it's a reputable company. Don’t forget to store and bring digital and physical copies of all your documents in case of emergencies.

Tip #2 - Notify Your Bank of Travel

Let your bank know you’ll be traveling to prevent your cards from being flagged for suspicious activity. While it is not required, it is highly recommended to avoid any additional headaches.

Pro-Tip: Be sure to check whether your debit or credit card offers no foreign transaction fees - those fees can add up!

Tip #3 - Be Prepared for Change

Planning an international trip is exciting, but it requires extra attention to detail. To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience it’s essential to think about more than just your flights and accommodations. Here are some critical factors to keep in mind when crossing borders and time zones:

  • Time Zone Differences & Jet Lag: Traveling across time zones can throw off your internal clock, especially on long-haul flights. To minimize the effects of jet lag: stay hydrated and sync quickly to your arrival country natural light and local time.

  • Double-Check Your Dates for Hotels, Transportation & Excursions: Crossing time zones can lead to confusion when booking accommodations, tours, and transfers. Ensure you’ve selected the correct dates for each reservation based on date/times of the country you are heading to.

  • Seasonal Differences: Seasons vary depending on your destination’s location, and what’s summer at home could be winter elsewhere. Countries like Australia, South Africa, and Brazil experience opposite seasons to those in the Northern Hemisphere. Not to mention, Tropical regions often have rainy and dry seasons. Be sure to check the weather and pack accordingly.

Tip #4 - Opt for Local Restaurants & Reservations

While tourist hot spots may come highly recommended or be convenient, be sure to include a few local restaurant spots in your itinerary as well. Prior to your trip, research what dishes are popular for the countries you’ll be visiting. There’s nothing like trying authentic food! If you will be visiting more popular and/or upscale options, check the websites to see if they require reservations and book early!

Tip #5 - Download Essential Apps

Make your trip easier by downloading travel apps like Google Maps (for offline navigation), a translation app, and any local transit or rideshare apps, prior to your departure. Also, consider apps for currency conversion, restaurant recommendations, or attraction guides.

Tip #6 - Plan Your Packing Strategy

Start thinking about what you want to bring and what items you want to purchase to bring back. If you plan on doing major shopping, be sure to leave room in your suitcase upon arrival or travel with an empty suitcase. Always be sure to check airline baggage policies and weigh your luggage to avoid extra fees.

Tip #7 - Leave Room for Spontaneity

While planning is important, don’t over-schedule your trip. Leave time for unexpected discoveries, relaxation, or recommendations from locals. Sometimes the best moments happen when you explore without a plan!
