What I Wish I Knew Before Traveling to Cancún

Updated: Feb 27

Find out what I learned in Cancún, México So You Can Avoid the Same Mistakes

Headed to Cancún, México? Before embarking on your journey to Cancún, it's essential to familiarize yourself with several key aspects to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. Nestled along the Caribbean coast, Cancún is renowned for its pristine beaches, vibrant nightlife, and rich cultural heritage. However, beyond its alluring facade, travelers should be aware of various practical considerations, such as local customs, safety precautions, currency exchange, and transportation options. Understanding these nuances can enhance your trip, allowing you to immerse yourself fully in the beauty and charm of this popular tourist destination while navigating potential challenges with confidence and ease!

Tip #1 - Pre-book your airport transfer

Pre-book your airport transfer using a company such as UNIT Travel to transfer you to your accommodations. Taxi drivers are known for scamming tourist. Not pre-booking could cost you upwards of $100 one-way just for a 30 minute ride to the Hotel Zone.

Not staying in Cancún? Pre-book your airport transfer with a company such as ADO Bus which offers transportation to other popular cities in México such as Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and Merida.

Tip #2 - Skip the Vendors when departing the airport

Prepare to get hassled on your way out of the airport. Seriously. Once you past the stands for the Car Rental companies avoid those vendors... They are time share companies (unless that's your thing).

Tip #3 - Take the bus!

Staying in or near the Hotel Zone? Use the local bus to get around. It's about 12 Pesos (less than $1 USD) per ride and can take you all around the city.

Tip #4 - Pay in Pesos or US Dollars

Most hotels & restaurant establishments in tourist areas accept Pesos or US dollars. If traveling outside of the tourist area be sure to have Pesos handy.

You can withdraw money from an ATM which typically has lower service fees. Never exchange money at the airport.

"It is cheaper to exchange money at the bank (or by using an ATM) than the airport. Currency exchange stores and kiosks at the airports mark up the exchange rates to make a profit"

Tip #5 - Don't bring fruits

Do you usually travel with food? If so, don't bring fruit. Most fruit is illegal to bring into Mexico, so it's best to leave it at home or you could face a large fine from customs.

Tip #6 - Avoid visiting during hurricane season

Hurricane season runs from August to November yearly. You may notice slightly cheaper prices since this is considered the off season but you'll regret it once the weather impedes on your plans. Instead plan ahead & opt for the peak season which is December - May.

Tip #7 - Don't drink the water!

Tap water isn't safe to drink. Opt for bottled water instead at all times.

Tip #8 - Visit the Mayan Ruins and Isla Mujeres

Want to get immersed in the history? Be sure to add the Mayan Ruins to your itinerary. Some of the most popular ruins include: Chichen Itza (one of the 7 World Wonders), Cobá, and Ek Balam. Tours to these ruins typically include a stop at a Cenote on tours!

Looking for something more relaxing? Take a roundtrip catamaran to Isla Mujeres which includes:

  • Open Bar

  • Reef Snorkel Guided Tour

  • Snorkel Equipment

  • Buffet style meal

  • Hotel pick-up & drop off

  • Free time to spend Downtown

You can find additional tours available on Get Your Guide or Viator.

Stay prepared, so you don't have to get prepared!

Be sure to be prepared for your trip to Mexico! It's an unforgettable experience and a wonderful chance to indulge in a culture other than your own. We hope you found this blog post helpful!
